112 North Michigan Avenue Ballroom

Chicago

This 11,000sf ballroom was built in 1908 for the Illinois Athletic Club as a dining room and ballroom. The Beaux Art style room had been compromised over the years, following significant research it was determined to restore the space to its 1927 decorative style. A complete paint and finish analysis yielded a scheme rich with faux finishes, gold leafing, faux marble and sponge technique. Historical research and period photographs reinforced the paint findings, including a custom patterned carpet and elaborate drapes. All the finishes, lighting, carpet and furnishings were reproduced. The room now functions as a lecture hall, reception room, party room, projection theater and dining room for the School of the Art Institute. A team of SAIC Preservation graduate students produced the research and contributed to the restoration plan.
