Chicago Children's Museum

North Pier

This non-for-profit museum was relocated and expanded in two floors of North Pier, a turn-of-century heavy-timber loft. The very modest budget only allowed for the most basic build-out and finish. Creative use of strip fluorescent lighting, painted drywall, vinyl flooring and base set the tone for the design. A series of splayed walls illuminated by vertical gelled florescent tubes defined the entry. A refrigerator door art gallery extended the entry to the main stair. This central stair and adjacent space became the heart space of the facility. The various hands-on displays were arrayed around the stair. The exhibits were discrete yet flowed together as a unified composition.
